The Social Media Made Trend #
The Idyllic Movement
CottageCore has been around for a while , but has unsurprisingly accelerated since Covid19. The need to return to nature and a lust for all things slow living have shone a light on the aesthetic and way of life that the GenZ's have formed out. As if it were a comfort blanket ,a rejection of all things industrial and tech-forward. Cottagecore is a trend born out of the likes of instagram and Tumblr. As a movement it encourages a simpler way of life. Honing in on the 'slow living' trend we have all been drooling over for some time. It harkens to a more sustainable and eco friendly way of living, a desire to be with nature.
Think - growing your own vegetables, foraging for purpose and pleasure.Buying second hand items, breathing new life into the old, putting devices away; swapping them for baking or reading. (Unless it's to watch Countryfile or Gardeners World of course). Striped curtains and nature inspired fabric coverings, muted tones, imperfect ceramics, linens and weaves.
The aesthetic of cottagecore is somewhat idylic and based on a country living look and feel. Although can be applied to city and town dwellings alike. It's an inclusive trend, no matter your budget, your culture, gender, generation or your geographic location; countrycore is available to all , and all are welcome.
For myself, it instills a feeling of warmth and comfort. I instantly think of the Bennet sisters home in the 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice or Little Women. All those feelings you get when you pick up an Austin novel and are transported to a simpler way of living. A world long before digital innovation.
In terms of where to look for decor inspiration, local charity shops, antique fairs and eBay are a budget friendly and sustainable option. For the high street shoppers, options include :
Neptune - for classic furniture and fittings hand crafted and made to last.
Toast - for ethical objects and fashion
Morris & Co, Cole & Son, Liberty - for fabulous prints and wall coverings.
H&M Home - for ditsy printed clothing or bedding
Zara Home - for the details in napkins, delicate embroidery and cutlery with a flourish.
Nordic House - for your ceramics and decorative items.
