Christmas Decor - Looks and Inspiration for the home at Christmas
Updated: Jan 4, 2022
My top picks
As a stylist, I have the pleasure of shooting Christmas in the height of summer. As uncomfortable as fairy lights and prickly foliage is in the heat, it does mean we get an insight into what is going to be big for the festive season.
Below you will find seven different trends, something to suit everyone and then some. With a year like no other and no certainty of being able to mix households when it comes to decorating, just go for it. A lot of us have spent heaps of time at home, including myself so I'm all for making my surroundings look a little more joyful.
Folk
Think Cottage core, characterful skandi illustrations and hand embellishment. Naive patterns and a palette of red, blue and white. Decorate with paper garlands, block print your paper and join the revolution of eco-friendly wrapping options. This theme is is honest, cheerful whilst being both rustic and contemporary.

Etherial
A luxurious look and feel that is delicate, etherial and light. Rooted in the arts of the Renaissance period, Etherial is a contemporary translation of classical paintings, sculpture and literature. It's opulent and full of volume, achieved with feathers, gold accents and blown glass.Think soft pastels and snow tipped foliage. The delicate nature of dried flowers would work beautifully with this trend.

Neo
Anything goes in the way of novelty items for this trend. It's colourful and fun with an air of rebellion. You can utilise your existing baubles and simply add quirky quirky items such as neon lights and bold wrapping paper. Perfect for anyone looking for something different this year....even tinsel is allowed here.

Woodland Wildlife
Inspired by the woodlands and its inhabitants, this trend has a colour palette true to a more traditional setting. Think Christmas in the highlands, fir trees, holly, tartan, warm woods and cosy throws. Accessories are individual and handmade adding a sustainable element with an ethos of helping local makers and stores. Wrap your presents in brown paper , string and a foraged sprig or two. You can also incorporate your foraged greenery into mantle displays and vases.

Considered
A minimal approach is sure to be on the cards this year. To escape the noise of the over purchasing and the materialistic nature of flash sales and black Friday 'deals' of the high street and everyone's inbox. To achieve this look, stick to a subtle and restricted colour palette, using contrasting textures and finishes to create interest. Such as faux fur or velvet with glass and raw woods. Using warm lights and candles will keep the feel cosy and inviting.

Winter Wonderland
A modern classic, based around snowy landscapes with a Narnia-like feel. This look is delicate and gentle on the eye. To ensure warmth with winter wonderland , again, ensure your fairy lights are a warm white rather than a blue hue. Textures should be a plenty, mix matt and gloss to create contrast. Textures can include glass, pearlised surfaces, fur, marble, chrome and the colours should be limited to white's and greens with delicate blues and taupe as accents.

Luxe
Last but certainly not least is a trend influenced by art nouveau patterns and geometric shapes. Think metallics, cut glass, deep rich colours, animal prints, velvets and organic forms This is another all-out trend that suits those of us with a preference for darker interiors. To really achieve the full effect you must decorate any surface you can, side tables, drinks trolleys and the like. Hek, you can even get away with a gold tree!
